This winter many fifth graders are taking a "virtual" vacation to Montana’s 42 State Parks in preparation for the annual Montana State Parks Poster Contest.

"The Internet tour enables students visit their favorite parks online so they can select one in particular to illustrate on their poster," said Debbie Cheek, FWP’s parks field support specialist who manages the contest.  This year’s poster theme is "The State Park I would most like to visit with my family is...."

"I’m hoping that this virtual tour of our parks leads to real visits this summer,” Cheek said.

Everything related to the 2003 Parks Poster Contest, including the online tour of the parks, is available on the FWP web site by going to www.fwp.state.mt.us and clicking on Parks then looking under Hot Topics.

Entrants in the poster contest may use any medium that is suitable for reproduction, such as crayon, ink, or pencil.  Judging will take into account: creativity, imagination, theme, originality, design, use and control of the artistic technique or means of expression.

Prizes will be a $150 savings bond for first place, a $100 savings bond for second place, and a $50 savings bond for third place.  All finalists will receive T-shirts with the winning entry printed on them.  The school submitting the winning poster will receive a free FWP video book for its library.

Winning entries will be displayed in the front lobby at the Helena FWP headquarters and at all regional FWP headquarters offices around the state.  The winning entry may also be used as a T-shirt print, a model for posters, or on any other item the FWP Parks Division may select during 2003.

The deadline for poster entries is April 4, 2003.  Winners will be announced on April 10.
