Looking for a winter project that will remind you of summer? Then fill out an application for a 2003 Smith River float permit. Or spend a few nights reading the Smith River annual report.

“Smith River applications are available at all Fish, Wildlife and Parks offices,” says Joe O’Neill, FWP Smith River manager. “You can also download them from FWP’s web site.”

On the Internet, go to FWP’s web site at www.fwp.state.mt.us . From there, go to Parks under Hot Topics and click on the Smith River Application.

“After downloading, print it out and mail it back to FWP in Helena,” O’Neill says. “We don’t accept applications over the Internet because we need an original signature. And we currently don’t accept payment for Smith River applications over the Internet.”

Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 14. Permits are required to float the Smith.

The Smith River annual report lists everything there is to know about what happened last year on the popular north central Montana stream. The 56-page document has sections on the season’s activities, heart-stopping statistics and a handful of gripping graphs and charts.

To receive a free Smith River annual report or a permit application call the FWP Great Falls office at (406) 454-5840.
