Learn backpacking in the beautiful Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains. The Montana Becoming an Outdoors Woman program has teamed up with Voyageur Outward Bound School (VOBS) to offer a 5-day backpacking adventure for women. The class begins in Red Lodge and runs June 26-30.

The journey begins in lowland foothills, at about 6,000 feet, and then ascends mountain canyons to the high alpine plateaus above tree line. Participants will backpack across the plateaus, cross streams, traverse mountain passes, and attempt a peak ascent. With hiking both on and off trail, this class will take place in the wilderness from start to finish.

Participants need only bring their personal clothing and boots. All food and gear, including internal frame packs, will be provided by VOBS. "The courses are designed to be challenging, yet safe and flexible," says BOW coordinator Liz Lodman.

For further information and a registration form, call Liz Lodman at FWP in Helena at (406) 444-2615 or e-mail her at: llodman@state.mt.us. The registration deadline is May 20.
