Smith River permit applications for the 2002 float season are now available at all Fish, Wildlife & Parks offices, as well as on the Internet.

"We’ve put them on the Internet along with making them available at the FWP offices in order to make the application process as convenient as possible," says Joe O’Neill, FWP Smith River manager.

Applications must be postmarked on or before February 15 for entry into a random drawing.  Results will be mailed out by the middle of March.  Refunds will be mailed out by the end of March.

While applications can be downloaded from the FWP web page at fwp.state.mt.us, the applications must be returned by mail so they bear an original signature.

"Faxed or photocopied signatures will also not be accepted, just as they are not accepted for big game applications," O’Neill said.

The application fee for Montana residents is $20, which may be paid by personal check, cashier’s check or money order.

For non-residents, the cost is $40, which may be paid by cashier’s check or money order.  Non-residents may not use personal checks.

Cash may be sent at the sender’s risk. Only one application per person is allowed for residents and non-residents.

In 2001, 4,252 people applied for permits, the second highest number since 1992 when the permits were first required.  Low water last summer forced the number of actual floaters down to 2,262—the lowest number since 1992.  A complete review of Smith River activities in 2001 is available in the Smith River annual report.  To request a copy, call 406-454-5840.
