Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks has received 95 applications from cities, counties, state and federal agencies and private associations totaling $3.3 million dollars for development and maintenance of recreational trails.  The Recreational Trails Program will provide $856,000 for grants in FY 2002 and $812,000 in FY 2003 to successful applicants.  FWP’s State Parks Division administers these funds, with advice from the citizen’s State Trails Advisory Committee.

Recreational Trails funds can be used for all types of trails including non-motorized, motorized, multiple-use, community, rural and back-country.  Grant recipients must provide 20 percent of the cost of funded projects from local sources.  This can include cash or the value of volunteer labor, donated materials, equipment and supplies.

FWP is now seeking public comment on the grant applications received.  Copies of all applications are available for review at the FWP Headquarters in Helena.  Beginning in January, the grant applications for a specific region may be reviewed at the FWP regional office and all grant applications will be on the FWP web site at fwp.state.mt.us.

Written comments should be mailed to FWP, State Trails Programs, P.O. Box 200701, Helena, MT 59620-0701.  E-mail comments should be addressed to bwalker@state.mt.us.  The deadline for comments is Feb. 8, 2002.
