The 1999 Bannack Days celebration will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 17-18, at Bannack State Park located 22 miles southwest of Dillon. The festivities begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and will run through 5 p.m. Sunday. A variety of pioneer skill demonstrations and entertainment is planned, including some new activities. Among the skill demonstrations are muzzleloading, spinning and weaving, candle-making, butter-churning, quilting, blacksmithing, bonnet-making and cabin-crafting. Entertainment includes two plays, music throughout the day, horse rides, and children’s wagon rides. Several food concessions will provide an array of culinary treats ranging from pitchfork fondue to homemade cookies and cakes. The cost is $4 per vehicle for entrance into Bannack State Park, or free entrance with possession of a State Parks Passport. Bannack was the site of the first major gold discovery in Montana in 1862. It became Montana’s first territorial capital in 1864, and was home to a gang of infamous road agents, led by Sheriff Henry Plummer, and the vigilantes who enacted frontier justice on the gang.
