With the opening of Montana’s general big game hunting season Oct. 22, hunters who plan to pursue mule deer bucks in any one of 20 hunting districts in southwestern Montana are being reminded that they must possess a special permit. All other hunting districts within the former Southwestern-8 hunting area, once requiring specific hunting-license validations, will now be open to any hunter with a general Deer A license during both the gun and archery seasons. Both bow and gun hunters who received the special deer permit valid for taking an antlered buck mule deer (with their Deer A license) are restricted to taking one animal in the district specified on the permit. These hunters may not hunt antlered buck mule deer anywhere else in Montana. Special permits, which were issued only through the annual special drawing, are required to hunt mule deer bucks during both archery and rifle seasons in the following southwestern Montana hunting districts as part of FWP’s continuing management plan to increase mule deer populations and buck-to-doe ratios in this region: HD 202, 204-01, 210-01, 240-01, 250,261-01, 270-01, 281,291, 292, 300, 312(East portion), 318, 324,335,339, 343, 380, 391, 392.
