FWP Commission To Meet In Helena Dec. 14-15

Montana’s Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission will meet in the FWP Helena office, 1420 East Sixth Ave., Dec. 14, and at the Colonial Inn Best Western, 2301 Colonial Drive in the Lewis Room, on Dec. 15. The meeting will begin at 8:00 a.m. both days. The Commission will take final action on a number of land exchanges, conservation easements and an acquisition on Dec. 14 including:

  • The exchange of two tracts of surplus FWP property in the City of Helena for property adjacent to Spring Meadow Lake State Park. The exchange is part of the plan to relocate the FWP wildlife rehabilitation facility from its current location on Custer Ave. to property adjacent to Spring Meadow Lake State Park;
  • A land exchange with the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation in which land of cultural and archeological importance owned by DNRC adjacent to Ulm Pishkun State Park will be traded for a section of grazing land at Makoshika State Park owned by FWP. The total trade consists of approximately 2,060 acres;
  • Donation of about 2,129 acres of land (Fertterer property) adjacent to the existing Beckman WMA near Denton from the Leroy Byron Beckman Estate;
  • An acquisition through the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation of about 9,000 acres of the Garrity Mountain and Clear Creek areas in Deer Lodge County.
  • Conservation easements on: the John Cowell Ranch involving 4,489 acres in Phillips County; the Dragging Y (Peters) Ranch on 14,650 acres in Beaverhead County; the Brown Valley Ranch restatement of conservation easement on 68.42 acres in Ravalli County; and the Manley Ranch conservation easement on about 4,636 acres of the Manley Ranch.
Also on Dec. 14, final action will be taken on the Lake Helena Commercial Fishing Regulations and Region 6 game damage permits. Tentative action will be taken on spring turkey permit quotas; game damage permit authorizations; black bear season regulation amendments in Region 1 and Region 5; black bear quotas; and lion hunting regulations. The Bannack and Chief Plenty Coups State Parks Management Plans will be discussed and an update on the State Trails Program provided. On Dec. 15, final action will be taken on a non-resident Upland Game Bird License sales cap and the Commission will consider the recommendations of the Beaverhead/Big Hole Advisory Committee concerning recreation management on these rivers and will determine future action. Tentative rulings will be made Dec. 15 on the proposed deer and elk hunting regulations and upland game bird regulation amendments.
