The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission approved acquisition of a prime Fishing Access Site on Big Spring Creek, west of Lewistown. The 50-acre site has almost three quarters of a mile of creek frontage and is located on Highway 426 halfway between the Old Carroll Trail FAS and the Hruska FAS. "With the increasing difficulty sportsmen and women are encountering in obtaining public access on this popular trout fishery, we’re fortunate to have this opportunity to acquire property there," said Larry Peterman, FWP Fisheries Division administrator. The funds to purchase this and other Fishing Access Sites comes directly from an earmarked portion of both resident and nonresident fishing licenses. Proposed development of this site will be based on an assessment of the needs of future users and on the potential environmental impacts of those proposed improvements. This site is expected to be open to the public by late summer 2001. A brochure listing the Fishing Access Sites across the state is available at all FWP regional offices and at the FWP headquarters office in Helena.
