Saturday, May 19, marks the opening of the general stream-fishing season in Montana. As experienced anglers prepare for the season, one of the most important items for their tackle box is a copy of the 2000-2001 Fishing Regulations. "A quick review of the first 11 pages of the regulations can help anglers avoid problems," says FWP Fisheries Management Bureau Chief Karen Zackheim. "The color-coded sections beginning on Page 12 contain specific information on each of Montana’s three fishing districts." In addition to becoming familiar with fishing regulations, Zackheim asks anglers to practice selective harvest, while using proper catch-and-release techniques when letting fish go. Zackheim also encourages anglers to consider maintaining an Angler’s Log, available at any FWP office. "Anglers often trek to out-of-the-way places we seldom reach," Zackheim says. "The Angler Log information helps to build our data base."
