Tongue River Reservoir’s great fishing and proximity to Billings, Miles City and Sheridan, Wyoming make it the perfect weekend get-a-way spot. These two factors also make it one of Montana’s most remote, yet most heavily visited, state parks. The dam, which was constructed in 1940, and approximately 1000 acres of land surrounding the reservoir, is actually owned by the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation. In 1983, FWP leased 640 acres of DNRC property to create Tongue River Reservoir State Park. In 1999, construction was completed on the damn that raised the level of the reservoir by four feet. All park facilities were relocated as part of the project. Facilities today include a fish cleaning station, RV dump station, concession store, fire rings, tables, graveled level camp pads, new latrines, camp host pads and a managers residence. Also included are new gravel roads-- quite an improvement over the two tracks across the prairie that became impassable whenever it rained (almost every holiday weekend during the summer). Public acceptance of the project was shown over the Memorial Day weekend when approximately 5,000 people visited the park. CONTACT MILES CITY.
