By this time of year, many, though not all, of our State Parks have settled into winter "hibernation." Water lines have been drained, tipis put away, entrance stations closed, and signs mothballed. Montana’s winter weather dictates some of this park rest. State Park staffing requires it as well. Winter is a crucial time for permanent staff to prepare programs, accomplish park planning, write job description for interns and volunteers, accomplish building and equipment maintenance, and work more with communities and friends’ groups. So, when you see a "park closed" sign, know that our staff may be busier than ever, even while the park itself takes a breather. Many parks are open by appointment for educational events.
