Every two years, the Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission reviews the fees charged at Montana State Parks. The Commission is considering several changes for 2000-01. The most notable include:

  • Adopting a "low income passport" that enables people who meet existing Medicaid and Food Stamp eligibility to purchase State Parks Passport at the discounted rate of $16.
  • Dropping the vehicle entrance fee at Ulm Pishkun and charging $2 per person.
  • At the 32 Fishing Access Sites (FAS) that charge $5 for overnight camping, increase that fee to $10 for those groups that do not have a group member in possession of a valid fishing license. Acquisition and maintenance of FASs are currently funded entirely by fishing license dollars. FASs are now experiencing marked increase use from nonanglers. This proposal would ensure that site users whose primary purpose is general recreation rather than fishing would contribute to FAS care.
  • Instituting camping fees in the Thompson Chain of Lakes FAS area. FWP will be accepting public comments until 5 p.m. on November 23. Your comments should be mailed to the address on this newsletter. Contact any FWP office for a copy of the tentatively adopted fee rule. The Commission will take final action at its December meeting.
