Montana’s spring turkey gobbler season opens April 12, 2008. Licenses are available from all Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks offices, on the FWP web site at fwp.mt.gov and from FWP license providers across the state. Hunters who wish to hunt in a special spring turkey permit area have until March 13 to apply: online at fwp.mt.gov; in writing; by visiting a FWP office or by downloading an application from FWP’s web page.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks has hired a river recreation ranger for the upper Missouri River in north central Montana.             Lindsay Smith, who started Jan. 7, will patrol fishing access sites, checking on site conditions, compliance with camping fees and litter pick up, and making visitor contact. Her area will cover the Missouri River corridor from Wolf Creek to Loma.

Expect to see a new face next time you stop at the Fish, Wildlife and Parks Great Falls regional office. Laura Doughty has been hired as an administrative assistant at FWP’s Region 4 office, 4600 Giant Springs Road. Doughty, who started Jan 7, runs the front desk. Doughty was born and raised in Great Falls and has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Montana in anthropology, with an emphasis in archeology. Previously, she worked at L.S. Jensen Construction in Missoula.

Permits to float the Smith River are in the mail. This year, 5,823 people applied for a permit to float the central Montana river, and 890 received the permit they sought. That’s a 15 percent success rate. Total applications this year broke last year’s record of 5,012. Of this year’s applicants, 4,870 were Montana residents; 953 were nonresidents. Fish, Wildlife and Parks Region 4 citizens advisory council will hold its next meeting Feb. 27 at the FWP office in Great Falls. A Feb. 13 meeting was cancelled due to inclement weather. The Region 4 CAC provides FWP with input and guidance on a variety of natural resources issues. The CAC will have a dinner and work session before the public meeting, which runs 5:30-8:30 p.m.
