For the 2008 hunting season some of the proposed changes affecting FWP Region 4 include: ELK A proposal to limit the number of bowhunters in the Missouri Breaks and other elk hunting districts where rifle hunting already is limited. Scaling down the magnitude of the elk hunting season in district 410, where the elk population is near the management objective.

The original plan was adopted in 1988 and last updated in 1996. Fish, Wildlife and Parks is looking for information in the Dec. 3 killing of two bull elk on the Judith River Wildlife Management Area. Someone shot two six-point bull elk about daylight on the main road through the WMA, says Bob Hammer, FWP game warden in Stanford. “These were big bulls,” Hammer says. Using the Boone and Crockett Club big-game trophy scoring system, Hammer estimates one bull at 370 points, the other at 280 points.

The extended elk season is over, and while final numbers won’t be known for months, it appears hunter’s efforts in north central Montana paid off. Numbers from Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ Augusta check station along with anecdotal evidence elsewhere indicate 200 or more elk were harvested in FWP’s Region 4 during the two-week extension that ended Dec. 9. At FWP’s check station in Augusta, elk hunters brought in approximately 50 cows and calves.

GREAT FALLS -- A heifer calf was confirmed killed today by wolves on private land in the Middle Fork of the Dearborn River west of Bowmans Corners, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services. Wildlife Services had also confirmed wolves killed a calf on the same ranch Nov. 25. 2007. Fish, Wildlife & Parks has authorized Wildlife Services to remove up to three wolves from the Monitor Mountain pack.
