The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission will meet in Helena on Thursday and Friday, February 4 and 5. Thursday's meeting will be in the Fish, Wildlife & Parks headquarters building at 1420 East Sixth Ave., while Friday's meeting will be at the Montana Department of Transportation, 2701 Prospect Ave. On Thursday, beginning at 9 a.m.

Spend a weekend in the snow learning about ice fishing, snow shoeing and winter survival. These are some of the "hot" topics covered in classes being offered this February at a winter outdoor skills workshop hosted by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. The workshop is scheduled for February 19-21 at the University of Montana's Lubrecht Experimental Forest, 30 miles east of Missoula off U.S. Highway 200.

The Private Land/Public Wildlife Council has finalized a new proposal that addresses the expansion of outfitting net client hunting use (NCHU). The PL/PW Council recently endorsed recommendations that "provide more precise direction to the Montana Board of Outfitters concerning administration of NCHU and outfitter expansion.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking comment on its 1999 fish stocking plan. The 1999 Stocking Plan is a new and improved report that lists waters scheduled to be stocked with fish produced in Montana's nine hatcheries. The plan can also help anglers and others better understand Montana's fisheries and FWP's hatchery operations. FWP is taking comments on the plan through Jan. 31.

Mountain lion hunters should note that the licenses they purchased for use this season are valid through April 14, 1999. Current mountain lion hunting regulations include the correct season dates -- from December 1, 1998, through April 14, 1999. The dates on the license reflect the license year, not the hunting season. Hunters with questions concerning the 1998-99 mountain lion season are urged to consult the regulations or contact their nearest FWP office or local game warden.

During Snowmobile Safety Week -_Jan. 17_23-_ snowmobliers across Montana are being asked to become aware of their safety and legal responsibilities. Here are some rules, suggestions and tips to make your snowmobiling experiences safer and more enjoyable. Certification * Snowmobile operators who do not have a driver's license must complete a Montana_approved snowmobile safety education course before operating on plowed streets or roads this winter.

The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission continues its public hearings on 1999 tentative hunting regulations with meetings in Glasgow, Billings, Bozeman, Havre, Kalispell, Great Falls, and Helena. During January, the commission has scheduled hearings on tentative regulations and quotas for the 1999 deer, elk, black bear, lion, and spring turkey seasons in several locations across Montana. The remaining hearings are set for: January 12 7 p.m. Cottonwood Inn Glasgow January 12 7 p.m.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking public comment on a proposed late antlerless elk season in a portion of the East Fork of the Bitterroot River, in Hunting District 270 in southwestern Montana. The purpose of the hunt is to harvest migratory elk that were not available during the general season. Mild weather during the past two hunting seasons has resulted in low elk harvests in this area, and FWP wildlife biologists are concerned about excessive forage use on winter ranges.
