Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks has announced that a limited number of surplus elk permits and antelope and deer "B" licenses will go on sale September 2. The licenses will be sold first-come, first-served by mail only from the agency's Helena headquarters through September 18. After September 18, remaining licenses will be sold first-come, first-served in the regions for which the licenses are valid.

Last winter, the Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission set seasons and regulations for deer hunting in Montana during 1998. In setting those seasons and regulations, the Commission: continued the validation requirement for hunting mule deer bucks in Montana.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is currently seeking volunteers and nominations for individuals to serve on a statewide trapping advisory committee. The trapping advisory committee is being formed at the request of the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission to identify and resolve conflicts associated with some trapping practices and regulations and other recreational activities. FWP Director Pat Graham said the public can help by submitting names to his office.

Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking applications to fill three openings on the Future Fisheries Improvement Program Review Panel. The panel consists of 10 Montanans whose backgrounds are determined by the legislation that created the program. One individual from each of the following categories will be selected: 1) an individual involved in commercial or irrigated agriculture; 2) a licensed angler; and 3) a stream restoration professional.

Randy Wuertz, a Fish, Wildlife & Parks game warden based in Gardiner, has been named the 1997 recipient of the prestigious Shikar-Safari Club International's Wildlife Officer of the Year award for Montana. An 18-year veteran of FWP's Enforcement Division, Wuertz began his career with FWP in Billings in 1980 and was later transferred to the warden position at Rosebud Battlefield near Decker in 1981. He moved to his current Gardiner assignment in 1987.

When the Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission set seasons and regulations for deer hunting in Montana during 1998, it eliminated hunting for either-sex mule deer during the special archery-only season in many hunting districts throughout the state. In other words, antlerless mule deer can no longer be taken legally by bowhunters in many hunting districts .

At its meeting on August 7, the Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission set tentative 1998 waterfowl hunting seasons and regulations. Waterfowl seasons will be finalized after season framework dates are received from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service later in August. With over 120,000 anxious hunters waiting by their mailboxes to find out if they were successful in drawing special antelope, elk or deer licenses or permits through this year's annual drawings, Fish, Wildlife & Parks officials have announced that technological advances are now allowing FWP to be even more responsive to customer needs and to provide information in as many easily accessible forms as possible.
