The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission has adopted two FWP planning documents that will guide the policies and actions of the state agency over at least the next decade. In adopting the planned course of action outlined in FWP's environmental impact statement on its Wildlife Program, as well as the actions recommended in "2020 Vision for Montana State Parks," the Commission gave its approval to FWP to begin operating in ways the documents recommend.

That Montanans remain concerned about the welfare of our wildlife resources is evidenced by the continuing use of FWP's toll-free--800-TIP-MONT--hotline (800-847-6668) to report observed or expected violations of state fish and game laws. At its most recent meeting earlier this month, the TIP-MONT program's Board of Directors awarded $1,550 in cash rewards to five of those who offered tips leading to the apprehension of violators.

On Thursday, November 19, Fish, Wildlife & Parks Director Patrick Graham announced that the state wildlife agency's Draft Environmental Impact Statement on its Wildlife Program, as well as a supplement to the draft containing FWP's preferred alternative action, would be adopted as the final EIS for the program.

On November 12, Montana's Private Land/Public Wildlife (PL/PW) Advisory Council developed its final recommendations addressing Fish, Wildlife & Parks' Block Management (hunter access) Program and growth of the outfitting industry. These recommendations will be submitted to the Governor in the form of a final report in December. In keeping with the Council's charge--that being to "review the progress of, and make recommendations concerning...HB 195 programs and related issues...

On the evening of Monday, November 30, 1998 the Director of Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Pat Graham, will be in Billings at a public meeting and anyone interested can attend. It will be at the FWP headquarters on 2300 Lake Elmo Drive from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Director Graham would like to meet with as many interested citizens as possible between now and the beginning of the 1999 State Legislative session.

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Trapping Advisory Committee will hold its first meeting in Bozeman on Thursday, Nov. 19. At this meeting the group will initiate its efforts to identify conflicts between trapping and other recreational activities. The meeting will be held in the Beartooth Room at the Comfort Inn, 1370 North 7th Ave. in Bozeman and will begin at 10 am.

Doug Monger, a 20-year veteran with Montana State Parks, has been appointed as the new administrator of Fish, Wildlife & Parks' Parks Division in Helena. Monger's work over his 20 years with the state agency has ranged from a position as a Parks Laborer, to a Park Operations Specialist, to Regional Parks Manager at FWP's Miles City office and, most recently, as assistant administrator for the division since 1990.

Sage grouse hunting season ended on November 1. The season for sharp-tailed and mountain grouse, as well as partridge, ring-necked pheasant and wild turkey, will remain open until December 15, 1998.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) Region One has written an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Desert Mountain Elk Ranch Game Farm owned by Steve Kvapil & Barbara Wuertz, PO Box 7483, Kalispell, MT 59901, Flathead Co., T31N, R19W, Sec. 28 SW SW & Sec. 29 SE SE, south of Coram. Applicants' proposed action will be in 2 phases: #1 consists of placing up to 15 elk on approx. 18 ac., #2 consists of adding up to 45 additional elk after enlarging game farm by 15.5 ac.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) Region One has written a Supplemental Environmental Assessment (EA) for Justin Haveman, 319 Sylvan Dr., Bigfork, 59911. Applicant proposes to add up to 4 mountain goats and up to 4 bighorn sheep in the existing 520 ac. enclosure at his licensed game farm referred to as the Royal Tine Ranch located approx. 2 miles south of Bigfork (T26N, R16W, Sec. 18).
