The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission will meet in Helena on Friday, May 30. On the agenda for the meeting, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the FWP headquarters at 1420 East Sixth Avenue, will be the adoption of final harvest quotas for the 1997 bighorn sheep, mountain goat and moose hunting seasons next fall, as well as final 1997-98 mountain lion seasons and quotas.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks continues to solicit public comments on several fishing regulation issues that have arisen while considering possible fishing regulation changes for the 1998-99 biennium. Proposed changes in regulations, based on the public comments received, will be submitted to the FWP Commission for adoption as tentative regulations one last time before they are adopted as final 1998-99 fishing regulations in November.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks fisheries biologists have completed netting efforts to remove spawning walleye from Canyon Ferry Reservoir. As part of the reservoir's five-year lake management plan, which seeks to maintain the lake's existing trout and perch fisheries, fish managers have been attempting to limit the population growth of illegally introduced walleye by tracking and removing spawning fish from the system.

Planning to bowhunt this fall? If so, now is the time to start your planning. That's because if you are an experienced bowhunter and didn't hang on to a previous year's bowhunting license, you may be required to take a bowhunter education course. And you may need to act quickly -- bowhunter education classes will end July 31 and no more classes will be taught until after January 1998.

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission is now accepting public comments on proposals to reduce permit numbers and institute other regulation changes that would affect overall hunting opportunities for mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk and antelope in various parts of Montana this coming fall. The Commission adopted the tentative changes at its May 2 meeting in Dillon in response to wildlife losses associated with the severity of the past winter in some areas of the state.

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission is currently seeking nominations of persons to serve on an advisory council that will review options developed by Fish, Wildlife & Parks for restructuring the states Nonresident Big Game Combination License. The restructuring was authorized by the 1997 Legislature, through passage of Senate Bill 394, to benefit the management of deer in the state.

Governor Marc Racicot is now seeking new members on the council that is monitoring the progress of programs implemented as part of a five-year effort aimed at reducing controversies associated with wildlife, hunting, and private land ownership in Montana. The programs being monitored by members of the council incorporate the recommendations presented by the Governor's Private Lands/Public Wildlife Advisory Council that resulted in the passage of House Bill 195 by the 1995 Legislature.

Hunters are reminded that the deadline for submitting applications to Fish, Wildlife & Parks annual special license and permit drawings for antelope and deer B licenses and special elk and deer permits is June 2. New this year is a requirement that hunters who receive a special permit for taking an antlered buck mule deer are restricted to taking a buck mule deer in the district or portion of a district specified on the permit.

Saturday, May 17, marks the opening day of Montanas general 1997 fishing season. Before anglers take to the water, Fish, Wildlife & Parks reminds them to carefully check the creel limits and size limitations established for the waters they plan to fish. Each year a number of fishing regulations change. Thus, anglers cannot assume that the regulations in effect on a certain body of water the pervious year will be in effect the next.
