At its meeting in Helena on November 7, the FWP Commission adopted final fishing regulations for the 1998-2000 biennium. Included are: 1) walleye and northern pike limits in the Central and Eastern fishing districts will be standardized at five (5) fish daily and 10 in possession for walleye and 10 fish daily and 10 fish in possession for northern pike; 2) lake trout will no longer be included under "Limit A" in Western and Central fishing district regulations.

1998 Early Bird State Parks Passports will go on sale beginning Monday, December 1, at all Fish, Wildlife & Parks offices and selected license agents. Early Bird sales will continue through February 15, 1998. The passport admits one vehicle and its occupants into any state park fee area. Passports are not needed for access to fishing access sites and wildlife management areas.

Volunteers once again proved extremely valuable to the operation of Montana's state park system in 1997. They donated 41,422 hours of time during the 1997 park season to assist with services at Montana's State Parks. The numbers of volunteers have increased from 800 in 1996 to just over 1,100 in 1997. That assistance has saved Fish, Wildlife & Parks funds equivalent to the wages of 20 full-time employees.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking public comment on a draft management goal for westslope cutthroat trout, Montana's state fish which has been petitioned to be listed as a threatened or endangered species. "Overall, the goal recognizes the importance of maintaining the genetic diversity and life history strategies represented by the remaining local populations," said Chris Hunter, who is in charge of special projects for FWP's fisheries division.

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission has postponed until mid-December making any endorsement of a long-range management plan prepared by Fish, Wildlife & Parks for Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park near Whitehall. That decision is now scheduled to be made at the Commission's December 11-12 meeting in Helena.
