                            DOCUMENTATION FOR NatRange.DBF

The native range table was originally compiled from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) species record database by selecting the native species from the database.  The records were then updated using the MFISH database and reviewed by state fishery biologists.  Data current as of 5-01-02.

Field                                                    Field description

SPECIES                                           ***Species name

HYDROUNIT                                  ***4th code hydrounit number

STATUS                                           ***Current status, H-historic population,  C-current population

Displaying this table in Arcview 3.x:

1.      Download the 4th code HUC layer http://fwp.state.mt.us/insidefwp/GIS/download.aspx - Fis

2.      Add the HUC layer to an Arcview View.

3.      Add a subset of the Native Range table to Arcview.  For example, if you want to see Westslope Cutthroat Trout(WCT) native range, query on the Species field for WCT and then save that subset as a separate table.  To do this in Arcview use the  File_Export from the Table Window.

4.      Join the new WCT table to the HUC table on the Hydrounit field.

5.      The HUC layer can now have a theme definition on the Species field = ”Westslope Cutthroat Trout” to display the HUC’s that define the Native Range for that species.
