Park Management Specialist
Park Program Manager

Professional Pay Band: Park Management Specialist: $35,280-$44,100
Managerial Pay Band: Park Program Manager: $44,100-$55,125

General Duties: Persons occupying positions within this job family are responsible for administrative, supervisory, and technical duties related to the management and operation of the state park system at specific sites.

Classification Titles: The Montana state park system is managed by Park Management Specialists (Park Managers, Assistant Park Managers) and Park Program Managers. Classification level is dependent upon amount of supervision exercised and received, the size of the park and the complexity of operations. A Park Program Manager (regional Park Manager) is responsible for all parks and Fishing Access Sites’s (FAS) activities within one of the state's seven administrative regions.

Educational and Experience Requirements: Minimum qualifications range from a bachelor's degree for park operations specialist positions to and including a master's degree in park and recreation administration or a related field with at least three years supervisory experience in parks management. Equivalent combinations of education and experience appropriate to the level of the position offered may be considered.


Park Ranger

Administrative & Program Support: $26,270-$32,837

Description of Work : Park rangers typically function as lead, high profile staff within the state park division responsible for work in resource management, visitor services, maintenance, park law enforcement and visitor compliance, fee collection and community outreach. Rangers can be either specialized or generalists depending upon site and park specific needs.

Examples of duties: Planning and coordinating interpretive programs for the public and school groups, performing maintenance or custodial work, patrolling parks and fishing access sites for fee compliance, rule violations and providing for broad visitor security and service needs. Provides visitor information, collect visitation data or administers surveys, oversees fee reporting and collection, coordinates speakers for educational programs, evaluates and oversees resource condition as site restoration, may issue special use permits or respond to public concerns. The park manager or assistant manager typically supervises staff in this position.

Qualifications: Knowledge of standard interpretive principles and practices, Knowledge of park and outdoor recreation management principles and practices, Ability to collect and remit use fees, Ability to utilize standard Microsoft word, Internet, and Excel computer programs, position typically requires a bachelors degree and 1-2 years of directly applicable experience is required.


Park Maintenance Supervisor

Maintenance & Skilled Craft Pay Band: $32,780-$40,975

Description of Work: Responsible for regional maintenance, supervision, coordinating repair and upkeep of state parks and fishing access sites. Supervises crews to carry out work, maintaining records and troubleshooting problems.

Qualifications: Expert knowledge of general maintenance and construction techniques, tools, equipment and construction materials, welding ability, ability to operate & maintain tractors, loaders, backhoes, mowers and trucks, lifting of heavy supplies & tools. Requires good health and physical condition. Must have high school diploma with five years technical training or related work experience.


Park Maintenance Worker

Maintenance & Skilled Craft Pay Band: $26,224-$32,780

Description of Work: Under general supervision performs a variety of tasks as lead worker to maintain state parks and fishing access sites.

Examples of Duties: Assists in park and FAS operation by providing lead presence in carrying for park infrastructure site maintenance, light construction, lawn and grounds maintenance, equipment operation and major maintenance and providing visitor information. May be required to possess commercial driver’s license, be certified to apply herbicides and confined weeds.

Qualifications: Working knowledge of routine park operation and maintenance tasks, skill in use of small landscape maintenance equipment and construction equipment. Must be able to lead work and coordinate tasks with few written or verbal instructions. Requires the ability to work outdoors in adverse working conditions, and the ability to routinely lift and carry approximately 50 lbs. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of related work experience or technical training.


Park Groundskeeper

Seasonal/Temporary Pay Band: $18,946-$23,683

Description of Work: Under general remote supervision performs a variety of tasks for daily operation of state parks and fishing access sites.

Examples of Duties: Performs park maintenance and operations by collecting fees, taking reservations, cleaning facilities such as latrines, toilets, showers, group-use areas; does landscape maintenance such as watering, mowing, garbage collection, weed spraying or cutting; performs light equipment maintenance. These positions are seasonal or temporary.

Qualifications: Must have working knowledge of routine park operation and maintenance. Some skill in operating small equipment such as mowers and trimmers is required. Must be able to work alone, must be able to account for funds collected, and must be able to follow verbal instructions. Must have the ability to work under adverse weather conditions and must be able to routinely lift and carry approximately 50 lbs. Must have a valid Montana driver’s license. Many of these positions require employee to supply his/her own pickup truck for maintenance activities and travel trailer for housing.
