Description:
Abstract:
Elk winter ranges, summer ranges, calving areas and migration areas for the state of Montana.
Purpose: Display or analysis of elk distribution in Montana.
Supplemental_Information:
Winter range data in the Elkhorn mountains were updated December 2003 based on FWP biologist information. Winter range data in the 2004 hunting districts 318, 335, 339, 343 were updated in June 2004 based on FWP biologist 2003/2004 winter observations.

Process_Description:
Converted Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation shapefiles of winter ranges, summer ranges, calving areas, migration areas, and limiting factors to ArcINFO coverages using the command SHAPEARC and specifying the subclass for each theme. Limiting factor coverages associated with a season were combined using the UNION command in Arc. The resulting combined limiting factor coverage was then combined with the associated seasonal distribution coverage with the UNION command in Arc. Once all associated coverages for a season(distribution and limiting factors) were combined the seasoanl limiting factor ids were generated by first selecting all polygons which had a seasonal habitat of "Y" and then calculating limiting factor id for the selected records to be equivalent to the $recno in ArcEdit. The seasonal limiting factor look up tables were generated using the PULLITEMS command in Arc. All limiting factor items (excepting the limiting factor id) were dropped from the polygon attribute tables using the Arc DROPITEM command. Coverage item names were altered by adding a letter to the beginning of each item to reflect the season (i.e. W for winter, S for summer, P for calving, M for migration) to avoid overwriting of items in future unions. The coverages were then combined using the UNION command in Arc. The resulting final layer was then projected from Albers to Lambert.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
WINHAB Y = Winter Range That part of the overall range where 90% of the individuals are located during the average five winters out of ten from the first heavy snow fall to spring green-up. WCRUCIAL C = Crucial Winter Range That part of the winter range where 90% of the individuals are located when the annual snowpack is at its maximum and/or temperatures are at a minimum in the two worst winters out of ten. WLF-ID Limiting Factor ID for winter ranges. This field relates to a lookup table listing limiting factors associated with the polygon. Limiting factors associated with this data were copyrighted by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in 1997. The limiting factor data are available to cooperating agencies (see metadata for Limiting Factors - Status of Elk Habitat 1999 in North America - Montana). SUMMHAB Y = Summer Range That part of the overall distribution where 90 percent of the individuals are traditionally located between spring green-up and the first heavy snow fall. SCRUCIAL C = Crucial Summer Range That part of the mid-June to mid-August summer range where elk concentrations are about double (200%) the surrounding elk densities. These are areas important for lactating females, calf-rearing, antler growth and other functions requiring high quality forage and security. SLF-ID Limiting Factor ID for summer ranges. See discussion under WLF-ID. PARTUHAB Y = Calving Areas Specific, mappable sites within the overall range traditionally occupied by calving cow elk from May 15 to June 15; the loss or alteration of which would manifest itself negatively for long term herd productivity and/or management. PCRUCIAL C = Crucial Calving Areas PLF-ID Limiting Factor ID for calving areas. See discussion under WLF-ID. MIGRATHAB Y = Migration Area Specific, mappable sites within the overall range through which large numbers of animals seasonally move; the loss or alteration of which would manifest itself negatively for long term herd productivity and/or management. MLF-ID Limiting Factor ID for migration areas. See discussion under WLF-ID.
