Abstract:

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Comprehnsive Fish and Wildlife Conservation Strategy - Tier One Aquatic Focus Areas. Focus Areas were developed using USGS 4th Code Hydrologic Units as base layer.The USGS 4th Code HUC boundaries are available at http://nris.mt.gov/gis/gisdatalib/showDownloads.aspx?covdesc=Major%20River%20Basins%20%284th%20Code%20HUCs%29&covid=1000106. Each HUC was ranked using both quantitative and qualitative criteria and using the ranks revised based on peer review and expert opinion. For methodology relating to this ranking please visit the Montana Comprehensive Fish and Wildlife Management Strategy website at http://fwp.mt.gov/specieshabitat/strategy/default.html. In some cases adjacent HUCs were combined to form an aquatic focus area.

To provide a spatial representation of Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks aquatic focus areas and associated conservation tiers.

The USGS 4th Code Hydrologic Units were used as a base. Tier rankings (conservation priorities) were determined by Montana Fish Widllife and Parks and were added as a new field to this layer.

The polygons with 'CFWCSTier=1' were extracted from the full suite of Montana Fish, Willdlife and Parks Comprehensive Fish and Wildlife Conservation Strategy Aquatic Focus Area polygons. A defintion query and export in ArcGIS 9.2 was used for this process.
