Abstract:
Historic range of the greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) in Montana. The data were initially researched and compiled by Dr. Michael A. Schroeder, research biologist for the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. The initial draft of current and historic range data was mapped and submitted to state, federal, and provincial natural resource agencies and other experts for review, comment, and editing. The final product represents the historic range/distribution in Montana based on review and incorporation of additional historic information by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks wildlife biologists and managers.

Definition of "Historic Range" - The historic distribution represents the bird's maximum distribution from the early 1800's to the 1970s.
Purpose:
The data are intended to provide a broad landscape perspective and broad analyses of historic sage grouse distribution and/or habitat.

Time period of content:
Beginning date: 1800
Ending date: 1975
Currentness reference: ground condition
Status:
Progress:
Complete, based on the information reviewed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, spring 2001
Maintenance and update frequency: None planned
Access constraints: None.
Use constraints:
Data not intended for display at scales larger than 1:1,125,000.

Title: Historic Sage Grouse Range in Montana
Other citation details:
This layer was generated from a map depicting sage grouse range as common or abundant in the following source:
Montana Fish and Game Commission. 1941-1942. Biennial Report. Figure 4 (p81).

This map was enlarged to an 11 x 17 inch page with a photocopier. The enlarged map was then registered on a digitizer using county boundaries to define tics (rms error was 0.018) and the sage grouse range was digitized as depicted on the map.
