Abstract:
Sage grouse habitat, current distribution in Montana. All areas depicted are considered potential habitat, with current occupancy status designated. This layer was generated from, updated and replaces the previous sage-grouse habitat layer from 2001. Data are represented at the plss section level.
Purpose:
The data are intended to provide a broad landscape perspective of sage grouse habitat and distribution in Montana. The data are intended for initial resource review, conservation planning, current distribution display, habitat display, and broad scale landscape analyses of distribution and/or habitat. The data are not recommended for use in evaluating site specific applications. For evaluating or reviewing site specific applications MFWP recommends contacting the appropriate MFWP Regional office.

Data Quality Information:
Lineage:

Process step:
Any section overlapping existing Sage-grouse Core Areas were classified as occupied habitat.
Process date: 09/01/2014
Process step:
Existing sage-grouse habitat data from 2001 layer converted to PLSS section level representation. Only habitat field, reflecting habitat occupancy, was converted. Any part of a section with existing polygon classification was given the highest order value. Values in order from highest to lowest were Occupied, Occupancy Unknown, Unoccupied, Non-habitat.
Process date: 09/01/2014
Process step:
FWP Biologists reviewed and suggested changes to the existing layer using an online mapping program that allowed visualization of reference information including, but not limited to: plss sections, cities, highways, county boundaries, 2013 aerial imagery, Montana Landcover, and the 2001 sage-grouse habitat layer. Biologists included any section possessing habitat where sage-brush landcover and other landscape characteristics would indicate suitable habitat that could be potentially occupied by sage-grouse. All other sections were excluded. Upon inclusion, the habitat occupancy of the section was designated as one of the following: Occupied, Occupancy Unknown, or Unoccupied.
Process date: 11/01/2014
Process step:
Once suggested edits from FWP biologists were incorporated into an updated layer internal boundaries between sections with the same Habitat value were dissolved. Habitat and occupancy status was not designated on the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian reservations. Sections were clipped to the boundary of these reservations and to the statewide county boundaries to represent only areas in MT.
Process date: 11/01/2014
Process step:
Final draft data was placed back on the web mapping site for final review by FWP biologists and any needed changes were incorporated.
Process date: 12/01/2014
Process step: Data layer finalized and metadata updated.
Process date: 01/01/2015
Process step: Dataset last imported to SDEDEV
