Abstract:
This layer depicts U.S. Forest Service (USFS) ecological subsections, which were used to define potential geographic focus areas for the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MTFWP) Comprehensive Fish and Wildlife Conservation Strategy (CFWCS) effort started in 2005. See the following USFS website for further explanation of the ecological subsections; http://www.fs.fed.us/land/pubs/ecoregions/.  The USFS source layer can be downloaded from Montana Natural Resource Information Service (NRIS) at http://nris.mt.gov/gis/gisdatalib/showDownloads.aspx?covdesc=Ecoregions%20of%20Montana&covid=1810. Each subsection was ranked using both quantitative and qualitative criteria and using the ranks revised based on peer review and expert opinion. The USFS sub-section ecoregions were used as a base.  Tier rankings (conservation priorities) were determined by Montana Fish Widllife and Parks and were added as a new field to this layer.

The polygons with 'CFWCSTier=1' were extracted from the full suite of Montana Fish, Willdlife and Parks Comprehensive Fish and Wildlife Conservation Strategy Terrestrial Focus Area polygons. A defintion query and export in ArcGIS 9.2 was used for this process.
