Site Facts

  • Open:May 1 - Sep 1
  • Size: 268 acres
  • Elevation: 2369 ft

The main focus of this facility is to raise warm/cool water fish (walleye, largemouth and smallmouth bass northern pike, and tiger musky). Production is seasonal. Visiting hours are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday.

The Miles City Fish Hatchery was originally constructed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1958. Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks took over the operation of the hatchery in 1983. To meet expanding demands for warmwater fish the hatchery complex was expanded in 1987. There are 49 rearing ponds varying from 1/2 to 3 acres in size, providing over 54 water surface acres available for fish production. The Yellowstone River provides water to the facility. Once inside the hatchery building, the water is filtered, aerated, UV disinfected and can be heated or cooled to feed 65 rearing and holding tanks of various sizes and 320 incubation jars. The building has an aquarium which contains fish representative of those species that are reared at this hatchery.
