Help Prevent The Spread Of Aquatic Nuisance Species

Anglers need to be aware that aquatic diseases and nuisance species can easily spread from one water body to the other.

Whirling disease, New Zealand mud snails, Eurasian water milfoil and zebra mussels are just a few of the destructive, aggressive invaders looking for a ride to a new lake, river or stream.

Anglers, boaters and their equipment easily transport these pests. It takes only one mistake to infest a new area. To protect Montana's waters and native aquatic species, please follow these guidelines:

• Remove all sediment and vegetation from boats, trailers and fishing gear when moving between waters. Don't forget to clean the soles of waders.
• Wash all boats, trailers and fishing gear between trips. High-pressure hot water is best.
• Disinfect gear (especially waders and livewells) if known to have been in an area containing exotic species. A weak household bleach solution (one part bleach to five parts water) works best.
• Dry boats and gear between trips.
• Pay particular attention to cleaning boats and fishing gear after fishing or recreating out-of-state.

Remember it is unlawful to move live fish, aquatic invertebrates or plants from one body of water to another without FWP authorization. It is also unlawful to release any live aquarium or bait fish.
