Black-tailed and white-tailed prairie dogs are native to Montana. The black-tailed prairie dog was abundant and widely distributed throughout grassland and shrub/grassland habitats east of the Continental Divide during the 1800s. The historic range of the white-tailed prairie dog was restricted to shrub/grassland habitats of the valleys located between the Beartooth and Pryor Mountain ranges in south central Montana. Both species declined in abundance during the 20th century.
