General Description

Migration
Non-migratory, although dispersal movements may be observed.

Habitat
Semi-fossorial. Inhabits talus slopes or rock outcrops in meadows. Abundant herbaceous & grassy plants nearby. Rocks support burrows & serve as sunning & observ. posts. Avoids dense forests. Rarely in holl riv bot fld pln c-wood trees.

Food Habits
Grasses, flowers, forbs--in late summer eats seeds. Mode- rate grazing by ungulates may favor marmots. Heavy grazing may have adverse effects.

Ecology
Occurs from valley bottoms to alpine tundra where suitable habitat exists. Where Marmota caligata occurs, M. flavi- ventris is restricted to lower elevations.

Reproductive Characteristics
Where the growing season is short, females may not reproduce in consecutive years. Litter emergence mid Jun-early Aug. Yearling female pregnancy rates variable.
