For a bear to survive through hibernation, it needs to consume 20,000 calories daily—that is equivalent to ten double cheeseburgers, ten large fries and more than 15 milkshakes. The Gardiner Late Hunt has a very long and colorful history in Montana. Hunters have hunted migrant elk that have come out of Yellowstone Park since the early 1900s. Over time, the hunt has evolved into the most regulated and successful elk hunts in North America. While elk numbers have allowed hunters a traditionally high success rate during the late hunts, the last decade has seen the elk population and calf recruitment decline.

The Blackfoot Valley is getting quite the reputation for being a place where good things happen. In 1995, the owner of this working cattle ranch, along with conservation groups and government agencies, joined together to restored the wetlands. Their work paid off when the site was selected for the reintroduction of ten trumpeter swans.

Montana has a rich heritage of winter recreation. One tradition increasing in popularity is snowshoeing. There are basically three types of snowshoeing: recreational, mountaineering, and necessity type.  For more than 6,000 years, snowshoes have been used primarily for survival and necessity. However, in the last couple of decades the evolution of snowshoe technology has created a revolution.

Montana's northern boundary of the Absorkee Beartooth Wilderness is rich with scenery and wildlife habitat; including critical winter range for one of Montana's premiere bighorn sheep herds. The only significant palladium mine in the western hemisphere is also right here. Thanks to cooperation and trust with all involved, things are working out for both the Stillwater Mine and the Stillwater Bighorns.

While the ecosystem in and around Yellowstone is evolving, the wintertime economy in Gardiner is also changing. For decades, the town has relied on hunting as a major source of revenue. Today, as the northern Yellowstone elk herd is in decline, locals are learning to adapt.

With the discovery of PCB's in the paint used over 25 years ago in Lewistown's Big Springs Hatchery, Montana's major producer of rainbow trout was out of production. Hatchery restoration is scheduled to be completed by summer 2006. The US Fish & Wildlife Service and Ennis National Fish Hatchery decided to help in any way they could and provided fish during FWP's shortfall.

If you're interested in seeing prime wildlife winter range, take a drive up the wind-swept Madison Valley between Ennis and Quake Lake. You will find congregations of wildlife perfect for viewing and ideal for research projects. Elk and wolf research in this area is expected to run two to three years.

Mild winter temperatures and below average precipitation can leave Montana's rivers, lakes, and streams in a dire position. As drought affects our waterways and takes its toll on all Montanans, solutions require cooperation from all users.

Chief Plenty Coups was the last principle chief of the Crow Tribe. He was a superb horseman, a ferocious warrior, and a leader who recognized the strength in education. Fishery biologists have determined that the absolute minimum water flow for a healthy Bighorn River is 1500 cfs. The last time the river had a flow above that minimum was back in 2001. Today, the river is flow at three times that volume … what a difference a month of rain makes.
