This grizzly bear was relocated and released. Notice how eager it is to escape the culvert trap while also trying to quickly get its bearings in new surroundings. By looking over its shoulder, the bear missed seeing the small remote video camera bear managers were using to observe its release. The affect is a bear encounter of the closest kind.

A bear is released from a culvert trap in a new location. It is moved away from the release site with the use of Karelian bear dogs, bean bag rounds, and shouting. The Karelian bear dogs are trained to move grizzly bears and establish boundaries with them. They do not harass or tree the bears. The idea is to communicate to the bear that it needs to avoid humans and areas that humans use. This is a concept bears, that are naturally very territorial, understand.

Bear managers in Northwestern Montana baited this trap to capture a grizzly bear. Here the bear walks past the baited bear trap to investigate the remote camera being used to observe its capture. Bears can be very observant and curious.

A grizzly sow attempts to open a bear resistant container with her cubs. Cubs learn food-seeking behaviors from their mothers and carry them into adulthood. Notice how persistent the bears are. To save young bears from behaviors that will eventually lead to their death, it is critical that adult bears be prevented from successfully finding food rewards when they approach dwellings or other sites used by humans.

Here a grizzly bear sow and two cubs, relocated by FWP bear managers in Northwestern Montana, are released from the culvert trap they were captured and transported in.

FWP bear managers are exploring ways to use electric shock to train bears, similar to the idea of using a shock collar to train a dog. Here a bear is deterred from opening a freezer it had raided in the past when it comes into contact with an electrical floor pad that delivers a mild electrical shock to the bear.

This wild bear in Glacier National Park displays the typical curiosity of a bear when it catches sight or scent of a human. Notice how deliberate the bear is in assessing the situation.
