Operator Age Limits
Children 12 years old or younger may not operate a motorboat or personal watercraft powered by a motor rated at more than 10 horsepower unless accompanied by someone 18 years of age or older.
Youth 13 and 14 years of age must either be accompanied by someone 18 years of age or older or must possess a valid Montana motorboat operator's.
Personal Flotation Devices (PFD)
- Anyone waterskiing or riding a personal watercraft must wear a PFD.
- Personal flotation devices (PFDs) must be U.S. Coast Guard approved and fit the intended wearer.
- Children under 12 years of age must wear a PFD on a boat less than 26 feet in length that is in motion.
- There must be a wearable PFD (Type I, II or III) for each person on board the vessel. For boats 16 feet in length and longer, one Type IV throwable PFD must be on board also.
