Olive-sided Flycatcher
(Contopus cooperi)
Olive-sided Flycatcher
The olive-sided
flycatcher
breeds throughout
mountainous areas
of western Montana with unconfi rmed
reports of breeding in central Montana. They
are often associated with post-fi re habitat, but
may also be found in other forest openings
(clear cuts and other disturbed forested
habitat), and forest edges. Conservation
concerns include: fi re suppression management;
decreased post-fi re snags and large
trees; and conversion of
forest to urban and residential
areas. Conservation strategies
include: using prescribed fi re,
timber harvest, and thinning to change forest
composition and structure to restore old open
forest conditions; retaining, maintaining and/
or restoring stands of open-canopy mature
and older ponderosa pine and cottonwood;
practicing selective logging; and retaining
forested edge habitat around riparian and
wetland features.
