What: Buffalo Kite Festival.

Join us at First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park for our first ever Buffalo Kite Festival!

Bring your family to participate in this festival led by Terry Zee Lee, who coordinated the Lewis and Clark kite display at the Great Falls International Airport, and has worked with Native American artists from around the United States to develop buffalo-themed kites. Come and view these beautiful kites and watch as the kites take flight from the top of the buffalo jump - wind permitting.

Visitors are encouraged to bring their own kite and join in the fun. Visitors can also purchase a kite kit for $12.00, build the kite and fly it on site. Children who built kites last year at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center are encouraged to bring their kites and fly them at this event.

The Buffalo Kite Festival is part of a traveling kite exhibit presented at various locations in Montana and Canada - in association with the Buffalo Kite Project.
The festival features original designs created by Native artists, including Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (Flathead Salish); Angela Babby (Oglala Lakota); Allen Knows His Gun (Crow) to name just a few. Illustrated with bison images, kites will be flown at the Upper Visitor Area atop the buffalo jump, where Native people once used the landscape to hunt buffalo for food, clothing, shelter, tools, and so much more.

In addition to the flight of the kites, the weekend will include a brief introduction describing the project and explaining the buffalo art on the kites. The event is sure to be great fun for visitors of all ages!

Presenter: The Buffalo Kite Festival is a cooperative partnership with Montana State Parks, Terry Zee Lee and Drake Smith of SkyWindWorld, Inc., a nonprofit corporation that organizes and sponsors kite flies and workshops, and traveling exhibits.
