Makoshika State Park Store

Eastern Montana is the backdrop for this Badlands park that feature hogback ridges, fluted hillsides, pinnacles and caprocks. The park is rich in geologic and dinosaur fossil history. At the visitor center store, items for sale incorporate the historical and geological nature of the park through unique art and gift items. Artist, naturalist and educator Clair Emery of Missoula, Montana presents a woodblock print of a Triceratops and the landscape of Makoshika that perfectly captures the history and scenic beauty of Montana’s largest state park. Local artist Gayla Rieman Wiedenheft was commissioned to produce a painting featuring a Triceratops skull, the signature species of Makoshika’s fossil record. The framed print captures the stark beauty and depth of field for which the Badlands are renowned.

In 1994, an event was held to celebrate the grand opening of Makoshika State Park’s new visitor center. In conjunction with that event, local artist Steve Holmes created a limited edition print of the caprock formations so prevalent in Makoshika. Holmes, pastor of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Glendive, Montana and a former humanities professor at Dawson Community College, also created a commerative postal stamp to honor the event.
